In Episode 4 of our Investor Summit Green Room podcast we enjoy the intelligent and data-driven analysis of the Iraq war and the UK economy which Simon French delivers.

Simon was an economist at the DWP, the Treasury and the Cabinet Office, made the move from public service to the commercial world of Panmure Liberum a dozen years ago and is now Chief Economist and Head of Research there.

In his view the headwinds holding back the otherwise ‘resilient’ UK economy are the highest cost of energy in the developed world, burdensome planning legislation and the many restrictions imposed on our capital markets over the last 30 years –in his terms ‘rationing’. Episode 5, Investor Summit Green Room podcast. Today we welcome Jacqueline Broers, Joint Portfolio Manager at Utilico Emerging Markets.

The Investment Trust invests in the top 60 or 70 high-quality emerging markets infrastructure and utility stocks. This country, sector and stock diversity has led to resilient long-term dividends and capital growth. 

Emerging Markets offer strong underlying growth, whilst infrastructure and utilities investments offer defensive stability and long term earnings.

For the last decade UEM have paid a progressive dividend with an attractive yield, currently at 3.7% and are looking to provide investors with the best long term total return. UEM is in the FTSE 250 and has a market cap of just over £500M.

The Temple Bar Investment Trust is managed by Ian and Nick, and has returned 250% over 5 years, beating it’s FTSE All Share benchmark (115%) and even the S&P 500 (103%). 

Their philosophy sounds simple: find mispriced stocks which remain good quality, but which have fallen out of favour by at least 50% of their intrinsic value, and invest for the long term. 

Ian joined us to celebrate Temple Bar’s centenary and a spectacular return to form for value investing.

Nick Brind, Co-Fund Manager at Polar Capital Global Financials Trust (LON:PCFT) joins us to run his seasoned eye over the global Financial Services sector – banks, asset managers, Stock Exchanges and online payment businesses.

In Nick’s words, the financials sector hums with the economy and the financial markets, and in that sense it is in a very good place.The sector greases the wheels of the global economy, and at 15% is the second largest sector globally after Tech and ahead of Healthcare.

Although banks are essentially a long-term value play, Nick sees an opportunity in pricing volatility driven by tariffs and the Middle East war – so long  as the financial markets remain unspooked.
