As we curated the Investor Summit our intention was to discuss the most important investing issues of the day. Which is why Sam Bell, the Summit Co-founder,  pushed hard for a panel discussion covering what we called ‘The Rise of Retail’: the persistent lack of retail investor participation in the UK’s investment landscape. 

Compared to markets like the US and the Nordics, the UK is decades behind in building a true culture of personal investing. As Moderator Maike Currie says, “We’ve wrapped the individual investor in cotton wool, driven by well-intended but ultimately limiting regulation post the 2008 Financial Crisis.”

Robert Crayfourd joined us at the inaugural Investor Summit held on the 13th August 2025 to give this presentation.

Robert is joint Portfolio Manager at the CQS Natural Resources Income and Growth Fund, and he has worked in this field for many years.

What interests us about the CQS Investment Trust is that it is focused on global mining and energy stocks, and it has a flexible mandate. Currently the Trust is overweight physical gold producers and has performed well recently. The share price is currently near an all-time high.

Annabel Brodie-Smith is the AIC’s Head of Communications, and she is one of the  most well known supporters of the Investment Trust sector.

Schroders is one of the UK’s leading investment houses, and it was a real pleasure to meet and interview Sue Noffke after she appeared on Annabel Brodie-Smith’s ‘Investing for Income Growth with Investment Trusts’ panel at the Investor Summit.

Sue is Head of UK Equities at Schroders where she manages £6 billion worth of assets. She also manages the Schroder Income Growth Fund, an Investment Trust and one of the AIC’s Dividend Hero’s, having paid out an increasing dividend for the last 29 years.

The AIC’s Annabel Brodie-Smith pulled together and expertly moderated a fantastic group of Fund Managers for the Summit – Sue, Rhys Davies, Fund Manager, Invesco Bond Income Plus and David Bird, Co-Fund Manager, Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust.

When we launched the Investor Summit 2025, one of the first people to agree to support us was Annabel Brodie-Smith, Head of Communications at the Association of Investment Companies, or AIC. And the panel she pulled together and expertly moderated was intended to showcase the different types of dividend income which Investment Trusts can deliver.

Annabel’s outstanding Investor Summit panel was titled: ‘The search for income: why investment trusts have the answers’. Taking an average, Annabel says Investment Trusts have been up 176% over the last 10 years, which is a reasonable rate of return, and they currently trade at an average 13% discount to the value of their underlying assets. Annabel sees that discount to NAV as a buying opportunity.
